
The heat proved to be no barrier at Kuranui College’s Athletics Day. Year 9 student, Peter O’Driscoll, achieved the outstanding result of the day in the U14 Boys Javelin with a record-breaking throw of 32.45m, beating the previous record of 31.35m, held by Ryan Renata in 1993.
Connor Turton dominated in the U19 Boys age group, winning the 200m, 400m, 800m and long jump. Amelia O’Connell was U19 Girls champion gaining first place in the 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, discus and long jump.
The competition was tight in the U16 boys with Jarrod Yee, Arapeta Kingi and Manish Narayan each winning two events. Jarrod Yee also placed second in the 200m and high jump, resulting in Yee gaining the top spot in his age-group.
The U16 Girls was won by Lottie Stevens, who finished the day with wins in the 100m, 200m, 400m, long jump and high jump. Maralyse Whiteman also showed her versatility in the U14 Girls coming first in the 400m, 800m, shot put, discus, javelin and triple jump.
Bradley Miller won the 100m, 200m and Long Jump in the U14 Boys. Whilst Matthew Keys placed first in the High Jump and Triple Jump. Tararua dominated the house relays and Aorangi was undefeated in the much-anticipated tug of war.
Kuranui Head Boy, Henry Isaacs summed up the day “It was a great vibe. Everyone I walked past had smile on their face and had given it their best shot,” he said. “Along with outstanding results across all age-groups, the supportive and enthusiastic atmosphere made it a great day for house competition and fun.”
Athletes who gained top two placings will now work towards competing at the Intercollegiate Championships on the 10 March in Masterton.
