Kuranui students Jack Lewington and Jarrod Yee represented Wellington at the New Zealand
Secondary School Track and Field Championships held at the Ngā Puna Wai Sports Hub in
Christchurch earlier in the month.
Year 12 student, Jack Lewington, overcame the windy conditions to claim two national medals. In
his first event, he won bronze in the Men’s Para 100m and then set a new PB of 4.09m in the Long
Jump for his second bronze medal. Jack also placed fourth in the 200m and fifth in the Shot Put, to
round off a very successful weekend.
“I didn’t want to put any big expectations on myself as competing at a national event is always a
big challenge. Any event I go to I aim to PB and just enjoy myself. But my ultimate goal would be to
make it to the Paralympics one day,” said Lewington, who only less than two years ago decided to
focus on competing in athletics.
Kuranui Year 11, Jarrod Yee, also produced outstanding results in the challenging conditions. He
placed sixth in the Under-18 Men’s Triple Jump with a jump of 11.88m. A remarkable achievement
for the 14-year-old, who excelled in the event after teaching himself the correct technique on
Youtube only a year ago. Jarrod also ran the last leg for Wellington in the U20 Men’s 4x100m relay
team that finished fourth.
Both boys are now training for the North Island Champs to be held in Hamilton at the beginning of
April, where they hope to continue their success.
