Cool conditions perfect for annual cross-country

Maralyse Whiteman took out the junior girls title

A cool, overcast day provided great conditions for Kuranui College’s annual cross country. This year’s event saw the largest number of participants for a number of years.

Over 180 students and 15 staff completed the run or walk, with everyone enjoying the music and kai at the finish line.

Maralyse Whiteman and Amelia O'Connell took out the Junior and Senior Girls titles respectively, to become triple champions across swimming, athletics and cross country. Lola Holbrook won the Intermediate Girls, and Technology teacher Miss Simpson the staff race.

Hunter Williams won the hotly contested Junior Boys 3km race ahead of Diego Sitana and Joulynn Parr. Niko Hoare and Jack Lewington led the Intermediate and AWD races from start to finish. The Senior Boys 6km winner was Connor Turton, who beat the first staff member home, P.E teacher Mr Oliver.

“It was really motivating having everyone out there supporting each other on the course and at the finish line,” said Senior Boys winner, Connor Turton.

This year saw the addition of a 3km walk, which Kuranui Sports Director, Kim Whiteman said proved popular with students and staff.  “The sports team was really pleased with the overall positive atmosphere of this year's cross country. The team look forward to building and refining the event further next year,” said Whiteman.

The Senior A Boys Basketball were also presented with new training shirts for being the sports team with the highest participation numbers, whilst the winning house was Wairarapa.
